Blackjack Tips and Strategy
Probabilities and Blackjack
Hundreds of books have been written about blackjack strategy but they all are founded on the basic probabilities of the cards you and the dealer can expect to get. When playing the game of blackjack there are two factors you need to consider

The total of your cards

What card the dealer has showing

The blackjack strategy card is a very useful little summary of what STATISTICALLY is the best thing to do for every possible combination of your card total and the dealers face up card. Note also that there are a large number of different strategy cards for every rule variation. This is just one example. Clearly the best strategy in a situation doesn't mean you will win every time by doing it, but it does give you the best chance of winning.

For example if the dealer has a 10 showing and you have 16. Instinct may tell you to stick as you know that anything above a 5 and you'll be bust. However the statistics say you should take a card as while it doesn't look that attractive a play, sticking on 16 is even worse (if you stick on 16 or less you can only win if the dealer busts and that is pretty unlikely given you know he has a 10).

Of course its a lot more complex than that as each may draw several cards and you need to consider every possible total for both the dealer and the player and every way of getting it. Thankfully someone has done this and summarised it in a statistical table.

Use this table to keep the House Edge in Blackjack to a minimum.
